A wicked problem that requires collaborative action
The national health crisis we can no longer ignore
Australians eat 19kg fewer vegetables per person each year than in 2001, with intake at just 1.8 serves a day. Only 6.5% of adults and 4.6% of children meet the recommended five daily serves. Malnutrition is fuelling chronic disease, straining health systems, and reducing the quality of life for younger and older Australians.
The vegetable industry is at breaking point
With demand falling, 2 in 5 growers may leave the industry within a year. This means higher food costs, fewer local farms, and greater reliance on imports, which threatens Australia’s food security. With 98% of fresh vegetables grown locally, urgent action is needed to support growers, protect livelihoods, and keep vegetables affordable and accessible.
Every dollar invested in the Plus One Serve campaign will deliver a $12.30 return.
The good news is there is a simple solution with significant benefits. Adding just one extra serve (75g) of vegetables per person per day will deliver a powerful triple bottom line of benefits, improving the economic, health, social and environmental wellbeing for all Australians.
